Disability Inclusive Development

People with disabilities face barriers that prevent their full access to participate in society. Disability inclusion therefore aims to consider the specific needs of persons with disabilities to ensure their full participation in society. Inclusion is the process of improving the ability, opportunity, and dignity of people, disadvantaged based on their identity [including disability], to take part in society. SSHJM disability inclusive development (DID) goal is transformative change leading to equal access to opportunities and outcomes for all people with disabilities.

About this theme

There are an estimated one billion people with disabilities globally, approximately 15% of the world’s population. An estimated 80% of people with disabilities live in developing countries and one in five of the world’s poorest people have a disability. In low and middle-income countries, people with disabilities and their families are poorer than people without disabilities in nearly all socio-economic indicators. People with disabilities face barriers in all sectors and at all levels from system-wide exclusion, including negative attitudes within the community and wider society in which they live.
