Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary (SSHJM) have been providing essential development and humanitarian support to the poor, marginalised and vulnerable for 150 years. The congregation originated in France, before moving to the UK in the early 1900’s, whilst also establishing a substantial presence in Ireland. From the 1950’s onwards, the SSHJM missionary development programme expanded globally to include numerous countries in Africa, the America’s, and Asia.

The Sisters were invited and called to live their Charism internationally and serve the global poor. Across the following 70 years, SSHJM worked tirelessly implementing impactful missionary development projects including establishing schools, hospitals, special needs centres, promoting rural development etc.

SSHJM’s current missionary development programme spans Zambia, Uganda, and the Philippines. SSHJM works with the furthest behind in varying context, both urban and rural. SSHJM works in the areas of disability, inclusive education, inclusive health, sustainable livelihoods, climate and the environment, and human rights. SSHJM is staffed by Sisters as well as local, highly skilled lay professionals.

Today’s Sisters are as motivated to serve the global poor as their predecessors were, as are the supporting lay staff who share the SSHJM missionary spirit, vision, expertise, commitment, and compassion to tirelessly fight injustice and eradicate poverty in solidarity with those we serve.
