In just a matter of weeks, communities across Cebu and Negros Oriental have endured back-to-back disasters, the powerful Cebu Earthquake in late September, followed by Typhoon Kalmaegi (Typhoon Tino) on November 4, 2025.
Typhoon Kalmaegi brought torrential rain, violent winds, and flashfloods that swept through Cotcot, Liloan, Bacayan, Talisay, Cebu City, and Mabigo in Canlaon City, leaving homes flattened, livelihoods destroyed, and hundreds of families displaced. Power outages lasted for days, markets ran empty, and entire neighbourhoods near riverbanks were washed away.
Tragically, the typhoon has resulted in hundreds of casualties and missing persons.
SSHJM Development, through the SSHJM Cebu Mission, is working tirelessly on the ground, reaching the most affected communities and supporting families who have lost everything.

Our Typhoon Response so far
Immediately after the typhoon, the SSHJM-Cebu Mission carried out rapid needs assessments in the hardest-hit areas. Families reported total loss of homes, widespread destruction of shelter materials, and an urgent lack of food, water, and basic supplies. In response, SSHJM distributed:

2,400 food packs
2,400 bottles of water

These were delivered to families across Cotcot, Liloan, Bacayan, Cebu City, Talisay City, and later extended to Mabigo, Canlaon City in Negros Oriental, reaching over 2,400 people in immediate need. During a follow-up assessment in Mabigo, our team observed devere destruction including riverside homes swept away, structures torn apart by a combination of storm winds and tornado-like gusts, and families now sheltering with relatives or in evacuation centres such as Panubigan Elementary School.

Following the September Cebu Earthquake, SSHJM has been actively implementing an emergency response with support from Misean Cara. This programme is reaching 2,000 people (500 households) with essential assistance, including food, clean water, hygiene and first aid kits, basic household items, and urgently needed sleeping and shelter materials. Additional supplies such as portable stoves, utensils, water jugs, flashlights, and basic footwear are also being provided to help families restore a sense of safety and dignity during this difficult time.Working closely with barangay leaders and local volunteers, SSHJM is ensuring that this support reaches the most vulnerable households first, particularly those who have lost their homes or access to basic necessities.
