SSHJM Uganda missionary development programme encompasses the work of two community-based organisations, Children in Need (CHIN) in Mukono central Uganda, and Women and Children First Organisation (WACFO) in Amuru district northern Uganda. 

About our work in Uganda

SSHJM Children in Need (CHIN)

​

CHIN was first established in 2004 to respond to the under-serviced needs of people with disabilities in Mukono town, especially children with disabilities. From simple beginnings, with limited resources and facilities, CHIN now operates a holistic, integrated, multi-sector development programme spanning all Mukono district. Key CHIN target groups include children and youth with disabilities, their parents, unemployed youth, and women. Annually, CHIN supports 80 children in special needs education, trains 200 vulnerable youths in Business technical vocational educational training (BTVET), empowers 400 households annually in sustainable livelihoods, and plants 30,000 trees. The CHIN development programme encompasses the following work:

  1. Special needs education school, including early childhood care and development (ECCD)

  2. Therapeutic services, including funding medical/ surgical operations

  3. Community/ home based rehabilitation programme

  4. BTVET skills training for youth

  5. Sustainable livelihoods programme including climate smart agriculture 

  6. Climate and environmentally resilient livelihoods practices

  7. CHIN learning and demonstration farm, and tree nursery

  8. Advocacy on disability inclusion, women’s rights, and child rights including safeguarding

  9. Social enterprise with numerous income generating activities

SSHJM Women and Children First Organisation (WACFO)
​

SSHJM Women and Children First Organisation (WACFO) was first established in 2004 during the Lord Resistance Army’s Insurgency in Northern Uganda, to respond to the plight and underserviced needs of internally displaced people in camps. WACFO has since developed into a prominent multi-sector development organisation working throughout Amuru District. WACFO primarily works with groups as it believes the group environment accelerates positive change. Annually, WACFO supports 960 households per year in sustainable livelihoods, reaches 1,200 with clean water, while also supporting 140 children and youth with inclusive education. The WACFO development programme encompasses the following work:

  1. Sustainable livelihoods programme including sustainable agriculture and water harvesting

  2. Climate and environmentally resilient livelihoods practices

  3. Water sanitation and hygiene (WASH)

  4. WACFO learning and demonstration farm

  5. Victor Braun inclusive early childhood care and education (ECCE) school

  6. Guadeloupe Rehabilitation Centre, including funding medical/ surgical operations

  7. Winifred Tyrell skills training centre 

  8. Community-based rehabilitation programme

  9. Advocacy on child rights including safeguarding, and disability inclusion
